How the Weighted Grade Calculator works
Course grades are weighted means: each category's score is multiplied by its syllabus weight, summed, and divided by the total weight graded so far. A 79% midterm worth 25% moves your grade far more than a 79% homework average worth 10%.
Grade = Σ(score × weight) / Σ(weight)
The what-if line answers the question every student actually has: given your target and the weight still ungraded, what average do you need on the remaining work? If the answer exceeds 100%, the target is mathematically out of reach; if it is 0% or negative, you have already secured it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add those products, and divide by the sum of the weights you included. With weights of 20/25/25 and scores of 88/82/79, the weighted average is (88x20 + 82x25 + 79x25) / 70 = 82.6%.
What if my weights do not add to 100?
Before the course ends they usually will not, and that is fine: the calculator divides by the weight graded so far, which is exactly how instructors report a current grade mid-semester.
What grade do I need on the final?
Enter the final as a category with its weight but score 0, set your target, and read the needed-on-remaining line. It solves (target - current x graded weight) / remaining weight for you.
Is this the same as a weighted GPA?
Same math, different scale: this weights scores within one course by syllabus percentages, while weighted GPA weights whole-course grades by credits or rigor. Both are weighted averages.
